  1. 5 Diet Trends to Watch in 2017

    Last year, the big diet buzz was to
    eat crickets. Yes, you heard right. Experts say the bugs are packed with Omega-3 fatty acids and easy to digest. (Yet I still can’t stomach the idea of eating crickets.)


    But 2017 is bringing a host of different diet trends — things that, if you’re like me, are a bit easier to wrap your head (and stomach) around.

    Here’s the top 5 diet trends, straight from dietitians, to pay attention to in 2017.


    1) Stem and Root Cooking
     

    Being more environmentally conscious has been a growing trend for many years now — and now it’s taking a new turn — in the form of cooking roots and stems. Often tossed in the trash, there are actually plenty of ways to make the roots and stems of plants taste delicious. The idea is to lessen waste by using the entire piece of produce, rather than just the common parts.



    2) Unusual Greens


    The demand for seaweed (and other vegetables like it) is growing. It’s delicious, plentiful and its “unami” flavor makes for a wonderful addition to soups and sauces — and also on its own. Try this Food Network seaweed salad recipe, for example. Yum.

     
    3) Vegetarian Food You’ll Want to Chow Down


    Ok, so you love burgers. (Me too). And if you’re a vegetarian, those are off the menu (literally). Not so fast. A new product called Beyond Burger is 100 percent vegetarian, but it actually “bleeds” and tastes like meat. And beyond even that, restaurants are already taking vegetarianism to new levels by serving mouth-watering stuff life fry (fried) bread and vegan cookies. Food bloggers, too, are constantly pumping out more and more delicious, meat-free recipes that you’ll find yourself coming back to again and again.



    4) Jackfruit (and other grains/fruits you’ve never even heard of)


    Don’t be deterred by jackfruit’s somewhat off-putting appearance. It’s meaty texture makes it so that, when it’s cooked, it has a similar texture to pulled pork. It’s sweet and has an interesting flavor, and there are plenty of fun recipes to try it out.


    5) Diet and Meal Delivery
     
     

    Make-at-home meal kits you can buy in a supermarket are going to get even bigger in 2017, as are meals you can have delivered right to your door.
